Printing Review Group Meeting 23/9/08

The Print Robots are insured for cash in the machine up to £1k but the machines themselves are not covered by insurance.  This is an increase of £500 which is excellent news as the machines will have the capacity to take more money.

EPayments – 2 new kiosks are arriving 6th October and will be deployed on the ground floor of the main library.  Epayments will be tested over the next 2 weeks and it is hoped that the interface to deal with library fines will be tested and ready in 2 weeks. Credit card transactions will be tested 26/9.

A recommendation on what printers to avoid purchasing for use with the central printing sytem was given based upon current known issues.  HP 2015, HP 2600 and HP 2605.  The buyit site will be updated with some guidance.

The next meeting will be held in 2 weeks.

Desktop 08 User Group meeting 17/7/08

The meeting was based around a demo of the new Desktop 08. I am writing a paper to present to the MT about the benefits of us adopting this. There are some user education issues that need to be considered as part of the roll out e.g., storage & type of data where it should be stored.

  • Screen resolution can be changed
  • Task bar widget to monitor file store capacity
  • A script will be run on the e drive so that access is limited to data for that user account only (useful for shared usage PC’s)
  • Oracle calendar can be launched via MDE using an instant on demand tool. If you use more than 1 PC this will happen whenever you sue a new location
  • VM ware Server – allows you to test out applications.  You can use snapshots and roll back to previous versions.  This feature very useful for developers/researchers.   VMware has admin rights so you don’t need this on PC.
  • Site Licensed Applications – all will be available and user launches from menu.
  • Non site licensed applications – requests go via the ESD service
  • ZenWorks – allows remote desktop management Request to use goes via VSD.
  • Pdrive redirection – laptops in the past had problems. Now all work saved in mydocs will appear on Pd rive. If network fails access can still be gained to documents via mydocs and anything created there during p drive unavailability will be saved on next log in.

Management Team Update

Duty Officer – The daytime duty officer role has been withdrawn on a trial basis. I am sure most of you know this by now.

24×7 Opening

This will be on trial during the Jan 09 and summer 09 exam period (20April -7 June). Staffing will be normal until 11.30pm

There will be a security, cleaning and duty officer presence

It will only be the Blue area which is open so there will be no access to study rooms.

Concerns which were raised included energy consumption, eating & drinking, cleaning, paper for printers, users sleeping in library

Service will be clearly communicated to manage users expectations that it’s a study facility which is available and front line services will not be available.

Food and drink Policy

To be discussed by the working party and will include the impact on 24×7.
